Transferring MiniDV tapes to DVD

If you have hours or even years of video footage recorded to miniDV tapes and have yet to transfer them to DVD then think of all those family moments that could be placed and additionally stored on DVD.

DVDs are easier to store and you can then watch a DVD anytime you wish on a big screen television or laptop. The older camcorder tapes are harder to transfer to DVD (at least if you try it yourself at home) but the mini DV tape formats are fairly easy to convert onto a DVD.

The quality of your older miniDV videotapes does degrade over time. If you wish to keep those memories for a long time, it's very important that you transfer them to a DVD format as soon as possible. MiniDV format is newer and will last longer than the older VHS tapes but they do lost their viewing quality over time and you'll need to keep the camera you used to record them in good working order to be able to view them from your camera to a laptop or TV using IEEE 1394 cable (also known as Firewire).

Please note miniDV tapes typically have up to 90 minutes worth of recording which can be transferred onto a single DVD. DVDs make great gifts for family members who may not see you for long periods of time or who maybe unable to travel. My parents always enjoyed receiving my family's DVDs in the mail featuring graduations, baby shower events and more.

Tranferring miniDV tapes to DVD is the best way to store them for the longest period of time. Sometimes making a 2nd copy of each DVD is also a good idea so you have a backup copy just in case.

Choosing to let a professional transfer your video movies to a DVD is a personal preference, however being able to share treasured memories in a format that is easy to share and easy to store is priceless.
